Describe this Character in 10 Words or Fewer: A peaceful scholar full of boundless potential and hidden rage.

Preferred Faction: Colonies
Explain Preferred Faction: While Gohan loathes war and violence on either side of a conflict, he is less the rugged type. He is optimistic and driven by a greater, kinder good. Between the two, I believe he would work better with the Colonies. Also pretty familiar with space travel/extended living in space, so that’s a bonus!

Character Personality: Son Gohan is first and foremost a scholar. He’s maintained a deep fascination with everything around him since he was a child, and as an adult he’s the kind of person to consider “research” one of the most enjoyable things he can spend his time doing. He’s moved mountains out of his way in search of knowledge, not letting lack of any sort of refined social skills or 500 miles of distance get between him and the best secondary school on the planet. Thankfully, he is smart enough to keep up with his drive and his curiosity, and even more thankfully, he’s something of an adaptable guy-making friends easily and over time even easing into a better (though certainly not perfect) set of social graces.

While he claims knowledge is his greatest passion, that sentiment neglects just how much Gohan cares about peace. Even though he was born to two martial artists (one of which being an alien who was very literally bred to fight), Gohan values pacifism utterly. He hates violence, and hates anyone-”good” or “bad”-to be subjected to any sort of violence. Even when faced by actual genocidal monsters, he would much rather not come to fists with them. It’s a particularly interesting trait, not just because of his background (after all, that’s really how his mother wanted him to grow up), but because of Gohan’s own amazing potential as a fighter. He’s powerful, incredibly so. So powerful that he’s been given “awakenings” to his “full potential” not once but twice and still has so much room to grow. He could easily become the most powerful being in the universe, but when he has the option, he never takes it. Or at least, never takes it as far as it can go. Instead, Gohan is content to settle into whatever path has him fight less. This is not, however, to say that he never fights. When pressed, Gohan will do absolutely whatever it takes to protect the lives of others-regardless of who those “others” are. There’s something of a self-sacrificing edge to this aspect of him, however; he is prone to throw himself either entirely into or out of the way of violence, and in the case of the former, he tends to throw his own health and safety completely to the wayside.

Part of the reason for this also feeds into why he doesn’t enjoy combat. Gohan struggles with one of the more prevalent parts of his personality-his tendency towards anger. It’s something he has struggled with since early childhood, all-consuming fits of rage that defy every pacifist, life-loving part of him. He doesn’t care how much he hurts someone, or how much he hurts himself, when he gets angry, but he knows that he wants whatever people he chooses hurt. These bursts are relatively short, but they have lasting effects. When it comes down to brass tacks, it’s a big factor in why he restrains himself as much as he does. He doesn’t like hurting people, even when he does, and would rather let his abilities go to waste than be forced to be violence.

But, really, he’s not entirely committed to that vow. When called upon, Gohan always in on the front lines. It’s because of his loyalty, how much he loves his very extended family. He’s self-aware of the prices he has to pay, though, to be a pacifist and battle his rage and let his training go to waste and always be there to help. He knows he’s fallen leagues behind of where he can be, and it’s the biggest demon he’s faced with. Really, though, he’s conquered plenty of demons-literal and figurative-before, and he’s convinced himself that he’ll do it again. But that remains to be seen.

In summation, Son Gohan is a peaceful, loving, smart guy. He’s capable and amiable and wants to learn absolutely as much as he can about everything that he can. He is full of love, and also full of anger, and he’s willing to do anything for the sake of both. He’s a man at crossroads, but he’s also someone very familiar with crossroads, and he knows that he will stand at many more-after all, his journey is nowhere near completion.
